Similar to an MBA, the Master of Health Administration focuses on building your ability to lead and manage effectively. To achieve this, each dynamic course unit was developed cooperatively by staff from The School of Public Health and Preventative Medicine and from the Faculty of Business and Economics. This mix of faculties has merged leading business practices with detailed health care issues and practices.
The Master of Health Administration consists of 12 units. Each unit you’ll undertake is skills-based and delves into many areas including leadership, health systems, policies and laws, economics, and epidemiology.
Your course curriculum can be divided into three course areas:
Management and leadership
This unit introduces experienced students to key activities associated with managing teams and individuals in an organisation, and includes topics such as managing in challenging environments, teamwork and the importance of individuals, effective decision-making, managing conflict, corporate culture and ethics.
The aim of this unit is to provide health service managers and public health practitioners with the knowledge and skills to manage health care organisational units.
Over 6 weekly modules students will explore key management theories, leadership skills, managing health professionals, designing and coordinating health professional work processes, managing change and projects.
Each module includes an overview of the relevant concepts and resources, guided readings and online, instructor moderated, discussions of applied issues with student peers.
This unit introduces you to basic accounting principles, such as how to read, analyse and interpret financial statements and assess financial performance. You will also learn about budgeting, cost management and performance measurement that may be part of the financial responsibilities of health care managers.
This unit introduces you to the economics of the health sector, including microeconomic approaches to resource allocation, tools for analysing the health care ‘market’, and frameworks for assessing the Australian health care systems and policies from an economic perspective.
This unit will examine marketing activities undertaken by organisations with a special emphasis on the healthcare industry. It provides an introduction of marketing concepts and techniques covering aspects like value exchange, development of corporate and marketing strategic plans, product and service development, the use of marketing decision making tools and fundamentals of consumer behaviour.
Health care systems
This unit will provide you with a broad understanding of the mechanisms of national health systems and how policies are tailored to improve and reform these systems. You will explore policy theories, stakeholders and processes in the context of major health policy challenges.
This unit acts as an introduction to biostatistics in relation to the design and interpretation of health-related research. All basic principles of biostatistics are covered, including the technical qualifications necessary for analysing data on a descriptive and bivariate level.
This unit will provide you with an introduction to concepts and applications in epidemiology, such as the incidence, distribution, and possible control of diseases and other factors relating to health.
This unit explores the health care industry from a legal perspective. Common law principles and statues are reviewed with a focus on medical and health law including such issues as negligence, consent, human rights, and ethics.
During this unit you will develop the skills needed to describe and analyse health systems and health sector reforms. Various different analytical frameworks are considered, including ways those frameworks can be used to review health systems both in Australia and offshore.
In this unit, you’ll learn about quantitative and qualitative research methods used in public health as well as the evaluation of disease prevention and health promotion strategies. Practical case studies will be used to study evaluation challenges due to the complexities in public health.
You will study the historical, political and social factors that impact the measurement of health care quality using epidemiological and statistical quality measurement principles.

To be eligible to study the Master of Health Administration, you’ll need:
an Australian undergraduate degree (or equivalent) in a cognate discipline, including health science, business, commerce, economics or law, or qualification/ experience or satisfactory substitute that the faculty considers to be equivalent, and
a minimum of one to two years of management experience,
to meet the minimum entry requirements for admission to Monash University,
to meet the English language requirements.
