Advance your skills in mental health practice
Growing awareness about the importance of mental health has created a surge in demand for mental health practitioners. The Master of Mental Health and Wellbeing will enhance your skills in person-centered communication, assessment and intervention, allowing you to make a difference in people’s lives across any industry you’re working in.
Your master’s degree is informed by professional practitioners in the field and draws on lived experience to teach you skills that can be applied across a wide diversity of mental health settings. Using an integrated case study approach, you’ll grasp the nuances in ability needed to effectively work with people throughout the human lifespan.

Be prepared with the abilities to prevent issues before they occur, respond and act when they do, and pragmatically adapt across diverse situations. - Effective communication
Learn how to effectively and sensitively communicate across diverse populations, and how to adapt your communication style for each individual.

Mental Health and Wellbeing foundation
These studies will introduce you to mental health practice at a graduate level. They are designed to extend your existing understanding or experience and apply it specifically to mental health practice.
You must complete the following units:
Foundations of mental health practice
Psychology: allies in Indigenous health and wellbeing
Core studies
The focus of these studies is to provide a core understanding of mental health practice at an advanced graduate level.
You must complete the following units:
Supporting Families for Child and Youth Mental Health
Supporting Mental Health and Wellbeing in Older Adults
Application studies
The focus of these studies is to develop your expertise in a discipline and provide the knowledge and skills needed for the capacity to work and communicate.
You must complete the following units:
Entry Requirements
Entry Level 1 – Masters Degree (72 points to complete)
An Australian Bachelors degree (or equivalent) with a Weighted Average Mark (WAM) of 60, or equivalent Grade Point Average (GPA) plus two years releveant work experience in one of the following areas*.
*Relevant work experience in one of the following areas:
- Community development
- Counselling
- Human resources
- Human Services
- Public Health
- Nursing
- Welfare
- Youth Work
OR
An Australian 3 year (AQF7) bachelor degree in a cognate discipline*, or equivalent qualification, with a Weighted Average Mark (WAM) of 60 or equivalent Grade Point Average (GPA).
*Cognate disciplines include:
- Counselling
- Nursing
- Occupational Therapy
- Psychology
- Public Health
- Social Work
- Youth Work
Entry Level 2 – Prior postgraduate study experience (48 points to complete)
A Monash University Graduate Certificate of Mental Health and Wellbeing or equivalent with a Weighted Average Mark (WAM) of 60,
OR
A Monash University Graduate Diploma of Psychology or equivalent with a Weighted Average Mark (WAM) of 60,
OR
A Monash University Graduate Diploma of Psychology (Advanced) or equivalent with a Weighted Average Mark (WAM) of 60,
OR
A Monash University bachelors honours degree in Psychology with a Weighted Average Mark (WAM) of 60.

Fees
For the Master of Mental Health and Wellbeing, the estimated cost is $4237.50 per unit. You may be eligible to receive a FEE-HELP loan to cover part or all of your tuition. Fees are subject to change annually.

Leah Braganza
Leah Braganza is the Director of Online Education in the School of Psychological Sciences. She is passionate and committed to creating excellent learning experiences for fully online students. Leah’s research interests have evolved over time from a focus on the neurobiology of obsessive-compulsive disorder to her current focus on best practice professional development for fully online educators.
Dr Kim Johnston
Dr Kim Johnston has a background in psychology practice specialising in youth mental health, family therapy, and substance addiction. She believes in the potential of contemporary online education to transform the lives of students and positively impact the communities they engage with. Her role is to support the Monash Online Mental Health and Wellbeing programs as Assistant Course Coordinator.
Celine Jona
Celine Jona (she/her) is an educator in the School of Psychological Sciences. Celine is also a registered psychologist with experience working with mental health across the lifespan. As a researcher, Celine is particularly interested in better understanding the most effective teaching methods to support the development of the knowledge and skills required to deliver effective therapy.
I have enjoyed interacting, learning and engaging with like-minded people the most. These interactions have given me motivation and inspiration to keep going and quench my thirst for further knowledge as well as advance my professional career.
